Nominee Miriam Galbiati

Research has become my career path since I came to Denmark in 2016 to work on my master thesis project at the Technical University of Denmark. That year shaped the rest of my life. After obtaining my master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Polytechnic University of Milan, I then continued working as Research Assistant at DTU, followed by Ph.D. in Physics investigating the electronic properties of 2-dimensional materials.  During my Ph.D. I started working on a side project to commercialize terahertz technologies. Back then, I couldn’t have imagined that 4 years later, the results of that work would have led to the establishment of the company Glaze Life Sciences, where I currently serve as CEO. The company focuses on leveraging terahertz light to measure blood glucose non-invasively, a pioneering approach that has the potential to improve the lives of millions of people living with diabetes. At times, I still find it hard to believe that Glaze Life Sciences is now a reality. During this journey, I faced many people telling me that the project would have failed. I guess I have never been too good taking no for an answer, and as I wrote in my Ph.D. thesis, “To go wrong in one’s own way is better than to go right in someone else’s” (F. Dostoevsky).
