Maria Fuglsang Jensen works as a medical physicist at the Danish Centre for Particle Therapy. A medical physicist’s job is to do all the physics related to cancer treatment with protons. This involves characterization, modelling, and continuous quality assurance of the proton beam. They also do treatment planning for individual patients and evaluation of the dose distribution throughout the course of treatment. They develop treatment strategies for new cancer sites and patient types and are a part of creating clinical trials together with the doctors. Maria has worked at the centre since 2017 before it opened for the first patient. Besides all the clinical duties and shifts, Maria’s specialties are proton stopping power calibration, beam modelling, and dose calculation algorithms. She also works with the development of and the physics-related follow-up on proton therapy for lung, breast, and oesophagus cancer. Finally, Maria takes pride in advising young physics students in their bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. projects in proton treatment.
