Kvinder i Fysik and the Niels Bohr Archive held a 2-day conference on 12-13. November, focusing on the role of women in the history of the Niels Bohr Institute.
The conference consisted of 2 inspiring days full of stories about pioneering women in the early days of NBI, talks about the careers of the women of today, and ended in a panel discussion about the future women of NBI.
The keynote presentation was given by Anthea Coster, Assistant Director and Principal Research Scientist at MIT Haystack Observatory, about the life and research of Lise Meitner.
Pioneering Women of NBI
During the conference, we have been introduced to the life and research of a number of historical figures associated with the Niels Bohr Institute, including:
- Hanna Adler and Kirstine Meyer – the first female physicists in Denmark
- Julie Vinter Hansen – the first female astronomer in Denmark
- Hilde Levi – the pioneer of the carbon-14 dating method
- Margrethe Bohr – who was a prominent figure amongst all who visited NBI
- and several other important women connected to the institute.
We would like to thank all our speakers who introduced us to the importance of these women.
