Ph.D. Profile: Bjørt Óladóttir Joensen

Bjørt Óladóttir Joensen is a PhD student at Surface Physics and Catalysis at DTU Physics. She is currently working on CO2 electrolysis, which is a way to recycle CO2 and produce high-value chemicals in a sustainable manner. One of the products is ethylene, which currently accounts for 862 MtCO2/year, and is a precursor to plastics, pharmaceuticals, and refrigerants. Bjørt’s PhD project mainly focuses on the upscaling and understanding the mechanisms within industrially relevant systems. A proper understanding of these upscaled CO2 electrolyzers is essential to improve performance towards commercialization.
